Re: Non-DEAD: I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat |
That guy wrapping the line around his hand is a total fucking moron. I can not believe it did not cut it completely off in an instant.
A moment for Hunter S Thompson. A .357 Magnum might have come in handy.

Re: Non-DEAD: I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat |
Actually, Deadhead225 has no idea what he's talking about!
That mate is a seasoned pro and highly skilled wire-man. He knows exactly whats he's doing and exactly how to "take wraps" on a big fish, having leadered quite a few Great Barrier Reef "grander" Black Marlin in his career.
It's virtually impossible to leader a fish that large without taking wraps, and if it's done correctly the wraps are easily dropped if the fish is not ready and needs more time before being brought to the boat.
In this case it's the captains (a veteran Cairns & Port Stephens skipper with lots of billfish under his belt) extremely aggressive boat handling on a very "green" fish that resulted in this mishap.

Re: Non-DEAD: I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat |
Might not know anything about big game fishing, but I know a lot about keeping my limbs and physics. That guy is totally nuts for the sake of a fish that would love to have him and all the rest of those guys impaled.
Total respect for the knowledge and seamanship though. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Non-DEAD: I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat |
Ah--well, there you go, learn something everyday...I kept thinking, wait a minute, am I missing something? And, clearly I was.
I worked construction in SF in the 70s, and on the 36th floor of a bldg downtown was assisting in swinging a bin full of equipment onto the open floor, from a crane, and wrapped a rope around my waist that was tied to the bin after it had been lifted to our height, while it was swinging out from the bldg and then into the bldg open floor, before realizing that "hmmm, if it swings out and drops, I will go with it" and quickly undid the rope...

Re: Non-DEAD: I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat |
Taking wraps on a big fish is fairly simple and not dangerous if you know what you are doing. Of course you'll need a pair of kevlar reinforced gloves if you're going to tangle with a giant tuna or huge marlin...

I can't believe I just read that whole article. Fascinating, thank you for the link!
this line made me laugh:
"just open your hand and let the leader come flying off. This is called dumping the leader."
Hey wait! Our governor is a 'leader', Ha!

Re: Non-DEAD: I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat |
So was the captain running that boat in reverse? No way that fish was strong enough to be causing it to swamp. I could not figure out what was going on with how he was piloting the boat to help get the fish in.

Re: Non-DEAD: I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat |
Yes, of course the captain was "backing down"
Sportfishing boats are not designed to be run in reverse at high speed. You see the result. It's actually pretty fun being in that situation (not a 700+ lb fish jumping in the boat though).
Hot-shot skippers like to aggressively chase fish. Often to prevent the reel from being stripped, or in this case to get the fish to the boat quickly in order to claim an official release (when the mate touches the leader).
